Katarina began skating on ice when she was five. Soon, her talents became apparent and she was accepted to Karl-Marx-Stadt's school for special needs. There she met their coach Jutta M ller. Witt was able to make her debut season in 1982 when she placed second at the World Championships held in Copenhagen. Her graceful and elegant style caught the attention of everyone, and from that point ahead she became the dominant figure skater in the sport. Olympic Success At the Sarajevo Winter Games in 1984, Katarina won the gold medal in figure skating for women after a fiercely contested contest. Four years later, she won another contest that was even more competitive. Actually, she didn't win the contest for free skating, but won gold based on performances during the compulsory figure and short programme. Witt was the first woman to be a repeated winner of figure skating, following Sonja Henie. Hall of Fame After enjoying success as an actress, Witt returned to the sport in the 1994 Lillehammer Winter Games. Although she didn't win a medal, Witt delighted her fans despite coming in seventh. The year 1995 was the year that Witt received her induction into the World Figure Skating Hall of Fame.
